Workplace Law is proud to have joined forces with some of Australia’s leading businesses, sporting bodies, and NGO’s to support the national “Racism. It Stops With Me” campaign.
Our organisation has committed to preventing racism by pledging to undertake activities in support of the campaign. Racism is never acceptable and we all have a responsibility to stand up against it.
The campaign, which is being led by the Australian Human Rights Commission, has been developed by a partnership of government and non-government agencies.
In announcing Workplace Law’s support of this campaign, Shane Koelmeyer (Director, Workplace Law) said
“Reading recent articles about kids still being subjected to racist abuse while playing sport reminded me of the racist abuse directed towards me by other kids when I was young and also from other players while I was playing district cricket in my mid 20s.
The fact that racist abuse on the sporting field is still happening after all that time is disturbing and prompted our decision to use Workplace Law’s brand, platform and expertise to fight racism and to promote inclusion.
Workplace Law is a beautiful, culturally diverse workplace (with employees with Australian, Mauritian, Italian, Filipino and Sri Lankan backgrounds) representing what is best about Australia. Our team is determined to play their part in standing up against racist behaviour not just on the sporting field but in everyday situations. Simply put, it is time to do what is right and to be the change we want to see in our country. We hope that our sporting partners and clients, who are yet to join this campaign, will stand with us.”
Research from 2018 shows that one in five surveyed Australians say they experienced racial discrimination in the past 12 months.
Research has also shown that one in three Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced verbal racial abuse in the past 6 months.
